Boom operator (pre-rec)

A boom operator is someone who is in charge of holding the boom mic/pole for sound recording during a production.

The role of a boom operator is to work closely with the sound operator in order to get the best possible sound/audio results during a production. It is important to find a suitable position for the boom to be held at - making sure that it is out-of-shot at all times.

This role can sometimes be quite strenuous as you could be holding the boom for long periods of time, so it is important to always keep your own comfort/safety at the forefront of your mind and tell the someone on the team if you need to take a break at any time.

Responsibilities:

  • Having a good understanding of the boom and its accessories

  • Being able to take instructions/suggestions from the sound op

  • Not disrupting the project - being quiet when filming
